Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 pieces chicken pieces (legs, breast, or thighs)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Oil for frying Use sufficient oil for deep frying.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper together.
  2. Dip each chicken piece in buttermilk, then dredge in the flour mixture until well coated.
  3. Allow the chicken to marinate in the buttermilk for a few hours or overnight for extra tenderness.
Cooking
  1. Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Fry the chicken in batches until golden brown and cooked through, about 15-18 minutes.
  3. Drain on paper towels and serve hot.

Notes

Serve Southern Fried Chicken hot and fresh from the skillet. It pairs well with sides like mashed potatoes, coleslaw, or cornbread. For storing, keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3 to 4 days. To reheat, place it in the oven to regain crispiness.
