  • 2 cups self-rising flour
Fat
  • 1/2 cup lard, shortening, or butter
Liquid Ingredients
  • 1 cup sweet milk or buttermilk
Optional Ingredients
  • Sugar (optional) Add to taste for sweetness.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Sift the self-rising flour into a bowl.
  2. Work in the lard, shortening, or butter until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the sweet milk or buttermilk, mixing until a dough forms. If desired, add sugar.
  4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut into desired shapes.
Baking
  1. Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) until golden brown.

Notes

For extra flaky biscuits, handle the dough as little as possible. Use cold ingredients, especially your fat and milk. Experiment with different types of milk for unique flavors. For variations, add cheese, herbs, or bacon bits to the dough.
