Method
Prepare the Custard
- In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and 1/2 cup of sugar over medium heat until warm.
- In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks, then gradually add the warm milk mixture.
- Return this mixture to the heat and stir until it thickens.
- Once thickened, cool it and set aside.
Make the Dough
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, mix the melted butter, 1/2 cup sugar, egg, and vanilla.
- Combine the wet and dry ingredients to form a soft dough.
Fry the Doughnuts
- Roll out the dough to about 1 inch thick and cut it into rounds.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer, then fry the doughnuts until they turn golden brown.
- Allow the doughnuts to cool completely before filling the center with the prepared custard.
Serve
- Serve your Cream-Filled Custard Doughnuts fresh with a sprinkle of powdered sugar or drizzle of chocolate glaze.
Notes
Ensure your oil is hot enough before frying; this will help the doughnuts cook evenly and prevent them from absorbing too much oil. For a smoother custard, strain it through a fine mesh before cooling. If you want to be adventurous, add a hint of lemon or orange zest to the custard for a refreshing twist. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days.
