Ingredients

Custard
  • 2 cups whole milk For the custard filling
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar For the custard filling
  • 4 large egg yolks For the custard filling
Doughnuts
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour For the dough
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder For leavening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt To enhance flavor
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted For richness in dough
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar For the dough
  • 1 large egg For the dough
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For flavor

Method

Prepare the Custard
  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and 1/2 cup of sugar over medium heat until warm.
  2. In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks, then gradually add the warm milk mixture.
  3. Return this mixture to the heat and stir until it thickens.
  4. Once thickened, cool it and set aside.
Make the Dough
  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, mix the melted butter, 1/2 cup sugar, egg, and vanilla.
  3. Combine the wet and dry ingredients to form a soft dough.
Fry the Doughnuts
  1. Roll out the dough to about 1 inch thick and cut it into rounds.
  2. Heat oil in a deep fryer, then fry the doughnuts until they turn golden brown.
  3. Allow the doughnuts to cool completely before filling the center with the prepared custard.
Serve
  1. Serve your Cream-Filled Custard Doughnuts fresh with a sprinkle of powdered sugar or drizzle of chocolate glaze.

Notes

Ensure your oil is hot enough before frying; this will help the doughnuts cook evenly and prevent them from absorbing too much oil. For a smoother custard, strain it through a fine mesh before cooling. If you want to be adventurous, add a hint of lemon or orange zest to the custard for a refreshing twist. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days.
