  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1/2 cup lard, shortening, or butter Cold ingredients help to create a flakier biscuit.
  • 1 cup sweet milk or buttermilk
  • to taste Sugar (optional)

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Sift the self-rising flour into a bowl.
  3. Work in the lard, shortening, or butter until well combined.
  4. Add the sweet milk or buttermilk and mix until a dough forms.
  5. If desired, add sugar.
  6. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently.
  7. Roll out to about 1/2 inch thick and cut into rounds.
Baking
  1. Place biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

Biscuits are best served warm with butter, jam, or gravy. Store biscuits in an airtight container for up to two days at room temperature or freeze for longer storage. Reheat in the oven before serving. For variations, consider adding shredded cheese, herbs, or chocolate chips.
